FCS Athletes Take ISA World SUP By Storm

by Chris D | May 18, 2015
SAYULITA, Mexico - Between the slow Internet connections and the colorful beaded bracelets, this sleepy little ex-pat town is now hosting The ISA World Stand Up Paddle Championships. 27 teams from around the SUP world are competing for gold here and there's an amazing Olympic atmosphere here in this small seaside village.

The first events were the men's and women's distance races held on a grueling 13 mile course in and out of the surf in 90° heat and stifling humidity.

The US team was dominant winning 6 of the team's 7 gold medals in disciplines that have run up till today. On Tuesday Candice Appleby crushed the competition in the women's distance race.

FCS SUP Candice Appleby

Candice had the lead off event and was the person charged with starting the momentum for team USA. "Pressure is a privilege and when you have your whole team on the beach supporting you it's makes your purpose a bit more clear. We're not doing any of this just for ourselves. We're competing for our teammates, our country, our families and of course God” said Candice Appleby who also won the Women's technical race.

“My FCS Candice Appleby Signature Fin worked awesome in the long straightaways and on the buoy turns and especially in the surf line. At the end of the race I was blessed with a victory wave and was able to show the fins versatility with a few fun cutbacks on my race board on the way to the beach."

FCS SUP Danny Ching

Danny Ching flew to Mexico for one day of competition. Faced with a very busy schedule for both stand up paddle and OC1 Canoes, Danny made the choice to travel over 2000 miles round-trip in 24 hours to represent his country. Danny's FCS teammate Zane Schweitzer (Team Hawaii) also made the podium with a Copper medal.

"I'm tired that was a long distance race, lots of paddling, it's super hot and my travel schedule has been rough. It was incredible to have team support and be able to represent my country. It's a lot easier to paddle hard when you are doing it for somebody else," said Ching.

The team brought a board and paddle down for me so this morning I was all set up and ready to go. I popped in my FCS Danny Ching Signature Fin and took it for a few laps on the new Twenty four and a half inch wide production 404 board."

Danny's fellow teammate Slater Trout placed a very respectable tenth in the Distance and 7th the Men's technical races in this grueling competition.

In the SUP surfing, reigning world champion 15 year-old Izzi Gomez claimed her first ISA world title defeating fellow World Champ and FCS team mate Brazilian Nicole Pacelli in the final. Izzi has been favoring the Mayhem fins for surfing lately in her Starboards. Izzi got in touch with her warrior spirit during Friday's gold medal finals. Against tough competition from Nicole and Caroline Angibaud, Izzi took the gold medal with a combination of smart positioning and aggressive radical surfing.

Sean Poynter was dominant in the men's SUP Surfing competition yesterday beating one of the highly favored local Mexican competitors who surfed very well with a huge hometown crowd on the beach. . “Thanks to FCS for your continued support! My game plan was to stay calm and not getting rattled and incrementally stepping up my performance to meet the challenge. I have a lot of confidence in my equipment I've really been liking the FCS ll Performers in my Starboard. I feel like I get a lot more drive and pop out of my turns."

Congratulations to all of the FCS athletes who competed at the ISA’s this year. It was an epic event with incredible performances and showmanship from athletes and teams across the globe.
